Breast reduction is a surgical technique that aims to minimize the size of the breasts by removing fat, breast tissue and skin, making them thin, stable and smaller and minimizing the size of the areola.
When the size of the breasts depends on excess fat and often causes back and neck pain, skin rashes under the breasts and even breathing problems.
Therefore, the objective will be to make the breasts smaller and in harmony with the body you have.
There are different methods that are used due to the size of the breast and the age of the patient, but most of them are cuts around the areola, vertically and horizontally in the crease below the breast.
In breast reduction, general anesthesia is used and the specialist separates the skin, the gland and the excess fat. He places the nipple in the indicated place and adjusts the breast.
Once the surgical intervention is finished, a bandage is placed to hold it in place, which will be renewed after 24 to 48 hours. Bruising and swelling usually appear in the worked part after the operation.
Sometimes there is a decrease in sensitivity in one or both areolas, which recovers as time goes by. In some cases the scars are inflamed, so they are treated with an incision with anesthesia only in the area, this after 6 months of the intervention.
Why this Surgical Operation is performed
Breast reduction is performed in patients who have very large breasts and wish to minimize the problems that this causes, such as:
*Permanent pain in the back, neck and shoulders, which forces them to take medication to relieve the pain.
*Irritation of the skin under the breast
*Nerve pain
*Lack of self-esteem due to the appearance of breasts
*Solving the problem of finding a matching bra size
Breast reduction is contraindicated in the case of:
*Smoking
*People with diabetes or heart disease
* Obese women
These surgeries can be performed at any age, even up to adolescence, however, if the breast is not fully developed, another surgery may be needed at a later date.
In the case of this type of surgery, it is advisable to postpone it if we have the desire to comply with the surgery:
*Childbirth or delivery: when our immediate purpose is to start a family or plan to have another child, it is advisable to wait, since breastfeeding can create cumbersome situations due to intervention, although in some cases there is no problem at all.
*When we are trying to lose weight, and we have a diet and physical exercise regimen, it will be advisable to wait for some time, since weight loss can lead to changes in breast size.
Breast Reduction Surgery Prices in some Latin American Countries
Having large and voluminous breasts is the dream of many girls, but not all of them. Some, on the contrary, wish to reduce their natural cleavage size, not only because a large chest generates discomfort and insecurity, but also serious health problems such as spinal injuries.
To meet the needs of many women who have large breasts due to genetics, or to protect the health of those who have undergone a breast augmentation but do not feel good with a large size, several cosmetic clinics in Colombia offer breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty. Let’s analyze here everything concerning its cost, what is included in the package and other data.
What does breast reduction consist of and how much does it cost in Colombia?
This surgical procedure is performed by removing excess fat, skin and breast tissue. Generally, the reason for a breast reduction is due to the excess of the mammary gland, which leads to health problems for those who suffer from it. The purpose of this operation is that the patient can improve the position of her spine, not having so much weight on her chest, and to correct breast asymmetry.
The cost of breast reduction in Colombia varies according to the area and its socioeconomic stratum, the clinic and the category of the surgeon who conducts the operation. The estimated price in Colombia is 7,500 million pesos, located in the lower strata or popular areas, up to 11 and 12 million pesos, if we are located in high strata of Medellin and Bogota.
Argentina
In this country, according to statistical data presented by the same specialists, the cost of breast reduction surgery is estimated at 40,000 to 70,000 pesos, requiring hospitalization.
Mexico
The cost of a breast reduction in this country ranges from approximately 75,000 to 105,000 pesos, all reported by several renowned plastic surgeons.
Dominican Republic
The average cost, especially in the capital city of Santo Domingo, and based on data provided by specialists and medical centers where the procedures are performed, is between US$3,000 and US$3,500.
Colombia
The approximate value of a breast reduction surgery in this country is around 6,000 to 8,000 million pesos, which is equivalent to 2,000 dollars. This data provided by some plastic surgeons is due to the fact that at the moment of performing the breast reduction surgery it is advisable to perform it with the maximum possible guarantees.
Chile
Breast reduction surgery in Chile, which is performed with or without prosthesis, always depending on the person’s requirements, has a cost between 1,800,000 and 3,400,000 pesos.
Panama
The cost of the breast reduction operation, according to estimates presented by some plastic surgeons in this country, ranges between $7,000 and $8,000.
What does this breast reduction price include?
The aforementioned prices cover the entire surgical process, i.e.: professional fees of the specialists involved, medical equipment, surgery room, clinic and room expenses.
That said, the whole procedure of a breast reduction can exceed 15 million pesos, since the patient must go to a first consultation with the surgeon, which has a cost of 80,000 to 150,000 pesos. In this, the condition and volume of the breast will be evaluated and, subsequently, it will be determined if the reduction is appropriate.
Then, the patient will have to undergo a series of tests to check her state of health, which have a cost of 100,000 to 200,000 pesos as a whole, although the price varies according to the doctor’s assessments. On the other hand, a consultation with the anesthesiologist (which is not included in the operation package) is likely to be required, and is priced at 100,000 to 200,000 pesos.
What factors affect the price increase of a breast reduction?
The price may increase depending on the technique that the surgeon must perform, which is determined by the volume of the breasts and if you have any prosthesis. The most expensive technique is the anchor incision, however, it is very effective and guarantees a quick recovery. This is done when there is too much mammary gland.
Among other factors that increase the price of reduction mammoplasty, is the area and clinic you go to (as you can see, in high strata of the central cities of the country is more expensive), the category and experience of the doctor and the popularity or reputation of the clinic.
Does an EPS cover reductive mammoplasty?
Unlike an augmentation mammoplasty, the EPS does cover -on certain occasions- breast reduction surgery, exclusively for cases where the patient is prone to or already suffers from serious spinal injuries.
Since it is a surgical intervention that protects the health of the insured, there are EPS that are responsible for covering the expenses. Of course, you must first consult with the entity to which you are enrolled and provide medical diagnoses.
Who may need a breast reduction?
Mothers who have suffered a sudden breast enlargement due to breastfeeding, women with genetically very large breasts who suffer from back pain as a result and women who have undergone augmentation mammoplasty but do not feel comfortable with the result.
