HOW PREGNANCY CHANGES BREASTS
Hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding cause the breasts to swell and increase in size, sometimes with various cup sizes. After you finish breastfeeding, the breasts may return to their normal size, but they are often smaller. If you have gained significant weight during pregnancy, your breast may remain larger. Regardless of which group you fall into, one thing is true for all groups: skin tightening. This extra skin does not disappear completely as the breasts settle into their new size and this leads to sagging of the breasts.
BREAST AUGMENTATION, BREAST LIFT, OR BOTH?
If you have experienced volume loss due to pregnancy and breastfeeding, breast augmentation is the solution. This procedure places an implant under the breasts, adding fullness and enhancing the shape of the breasts. With a variety of implant shapes and sizes, we can customize the appearance of your breasts and achieve your ideal shape. Breast augmentation can increase the natural size of your breasts, restore volume loss after pregnancy, correct asymmetry and more.
Breast augmentation increases volume loss, but does not correct the extra skin that causes sagging breasts. If you have breast ptosis (sagging), you may need a breast lift. The excess skin is removed and the breast tissues are repositioned to restore a youthful, perky breast appearance. A breast lift does not increase breast size; it only reshapes the breasts. Incision placement varies depending on the severity of sagging.
Breast lift surgery and breast augmentation are often combined to address both volume and additional skin problems. If you want to increase in size, but do not have sagging, you are a candidate for breast augmentation. If you want to reshape your breasts and are happy with your current size, you are a candidate for a breast lift. If you want to correct sagging and increase size, you may need both: a breast augmentation with a lift.
HOW WILL FUTURE PREGNANCIES AFFECT MY BREASTS?
Once you have regained your shape and size, your breasts will age normally. If you become pregnant again, your breasts will change again and repeat surgeries may be necessary to undo those changes. If you are actively trying to get pregnant, wait until after you have finished having children to have breast surgery. If you are unsure or are going to have more children in the future, surgery now will not prevent you from becoming pregnant or any breast changes that pregnancy may cause. Talk to your surgeon about breastfeeding and breast surgery if it is important to you for future pregnancies. Once you are completely finished with motherhood, breast rejuvenation surgery can be part of your mommy makeover.
