Breast augmentation vs. breast lift – what is the difference?

You’ve been spending more and more time recently clicking through pages on the Internet, trying to figure out which breast surgery will give you the look you’ve been hoping for. But you’re getting nowhere. All the pages give you essentially the same information – yes, it’s accurate and informative – but it doesn’t answer your question. It doesn’t answer The Big Question – do I need a breast lift, breast augmentation or maybe both?

Which surgery to have is something you want to be absolutely sure about. Your breasts are the key to your appearance, personality and happiness. And if you’re like many women, you’ve probably already delayed seeking surgery for many reasons. No problem. Having surgery is an important decision that you need to research thoroughly. But you shouldn’t let lack of information or fears keep you from having a treatment that can be transformative and positively affect every aspect of your life.

At Dr. Guevara Plastic Surgery, we would like to help make your surgery selection process a little easier. Here, we’ll give you essential information about each of the most common breast surgeries and identify which women would benefit most from them. We will also help you determine if you would be a good candidate for both surgeries. However, the decision to have surgery is not one you want to make based on a blog. We hope the information below will help make your in-person consultation more productive when you have it.

Breast lift

The main purpose of a breast lift is to improve the position of your breasts on the chest wall, as well as to provide women with a more pleasing breast shape. A breast lift will not change the size of your breasts. However, after a breast lift, the overall appearance of your breasts will look different. And it may appear that the size of your breasts has changed, once repositioned; these changes are an indirect but also beneficial result of breast lift surgery. These results are achieved without implants. We will discuss implants later.

A breast lift helps women who have developed significant skin and muscle laxity in one or both breasts correct these problems. These problems can have many causes. For example, rapid weight loss, while extremely healthy, can leave your breasts looking deflated. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can also have the same effect. Regardless of the source of the problems, a breast lift can eliminate these symptoms, in many cases. In a breast lift, excess skin can be removed and muscles tightened, restoring your breasts to their former attractive appearance.

After a breast lift, you will enjoy breasts that no longer sag or droop, improved contours in the upper chest and a much more attractive breast shape. The surgeon will also change the position of the nipple to complete your appearance. Once the excess skin and fat (if necessary) has been removed, you can also have firmer breasts, too, without implants. Since no foreign materials are used to enhance your breasts, the procedure is extremely natural, an added bonus.

Breast augmentation

If the size of your breasts is a constant concern, you may want to consider breast augmentation. The surgery improves breast size by inserting implants of your choice into the pockets of your breasts. You will have to make several decisions about the type of implant you wish to have. In addition, you can choose how the implant will be placed with input from your surgeon. These options give you the ability to achieve the highly customized look you desire with great precision.

Breast augmentation can achieve a wide range of results for women who undergo the surgery. Of course, you can enhance the size of your breasts with implants. You can also change the shape of your breasts. During your consultation, you can choose between round or teardrop-shaped implants, in a variety of sizes, to customize your final appearance. Placing your implants above or below the pectoralis muscle can further customize your appearance, giving you more upper pole fullness if desired. By choosing between saline or silicone gel implants, you can also determine how your breasts will feel, firmer or softer, respectively. As with a breast lift, your results can last for ten years or more.

What surgery should I have?

There are many more differences between these two procedures than those mentioned above. However, we have chosen to focus on the main ones. Both surgeries can reduce many problems affecting the breasts and substantially improve the appearance of this key component of your femininity. In addition, as we have pointed out, changing any aspect of the breast will affect the overall appearance of the breast, providing a complete rejuvenation. However, this tremendous benefit can only add to the confusion about which surgery will give you the best possible result. Patients with concerns about size and position, for example, may consider undergoing both surgeries.

That is why it is essential that you schedule an in-person consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast procedures and undergo a thorough examination.
