What does liposuction involve?

With liposuction, we reshape your figure in those areas of the body that are affected by an excessive accumulation of fat. Liposuction surgery in Bogotá sculpts the body, reducing unwanted fat deposits from regions such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, back, arms, neck, calves, ankles, and breasts.

Benefits of Liposuction

Eliminates localized fat

Liposuction Surgery Results

Results begin to be noticeable from the first month, as swelling decreases and the silhouette becomes defined. The final result is observed between 3 and 6 months, showing a more contoured and proportionate body. The skin gradually adapts to the new shape, also improving its firmness if there is good elasticity.

What is liposuction or liposculpture?

Also known as liposculpture, lipoplasty, body contouring surgery, or simply lipo, liposuction in Bogotá is one of the most frequently performed and popular cosmetic surgical procedures. It is often combined with other procedures, such as fat transfer to other sites, for example, the buttocks.

Liposuction is a technique by which we remove excess fat (“love handles”) from different areas to be treated (depending on the patient’s wishes, aided by an appropriate and correct diagnosis of lipodystrophy).

Depending on the technology used, we can talk about VASER-assisted liposuction, power-assisted liposuction (PAL), or laser-assisted liposuction.

The evolution of lipo is defined by high-definition liposculpture (HDL, 4K, 3D, 4D), an advanced liposuction technique in Bogotá through which we can sculpt the muscles and give a more athletic appearance. Regarding the latter, we can say that we have 3 degrees of definition: light, moderate, and strong, depending on the patient’s characteristics, clinical conditions, and athletic condition.

When to get liposuction in Bogotá

This type of intervention, which serves to shape the figure and not to lose weight, is aimed at those people who are within a normal weight according to their constitution. People whose treatment area has recently undergone another surgery or has weak blood flow, and all those who suffer from a lung or heart disease, should avoid undergoing liposculpture.

What to expect from liposuction?

This surgery involves the surgical removal of fatty tissue using thin metal cannulas through small incisions.

Liposuction surgery in Bogotá sculpts the body, reducing unwanted fat deposits from regions such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, back, arms, neck, calves, ankles, and breasts.

Although liposculpture cannot replace diet and exercise, it can reduce fatty tissue that accumulates in some parts of the body and is very resistant to traditional weight loss methods. The best candidates for liposculpture are those with firm and elastic skin who have localized sites of adipose tissue (fat) in certain areas of the body. Age is not of major importance, although in older patients the skin is less elastic and their results may be somewhat inferior to those of younger patients.

What is the recovery like after liposuction?

After the operation, the tissues will be swollen, taking 3-4 weeks to reduce in volume, so the final results can be considered definitive after 3 months from the intervention. A compression garment, stockings, or elastic bandage will be placed on the treated area to control swelling and bleeding, and to help the skin adapt to the new contour. It is usually necessary to wear it for 2 or 3 weeks, and then only during the day for a few more weeks, depending on your plastic surgeon’s instructions. Antibiotics may also be administered to prevent infection.

Healing is a gradual process. Your plastic surgeon will instruct you to start walking as soon as possible (to prevent the formation of venous thrombosis in the legs), but do not perform strenuous activities for 2 to 4 weeks. The stitches will be removed between 5 and 10 days, and you can return to work in 2 or 3 days, or at most, after 2 weeks from the intervention, depending on the extent of the liposuction and the recommendations of your surgeon. Swelling and bruising will disappear in the first or second month after liposuction; however, minimal swelling may persist for 6 or more months.

What is the price of liposuction in Colombia?

The price of liposuction in Colombia varies depending on a number of factors, including:

  • The surgeon’s experience: More experienced surgeons usually charge more.
  • The location of the clinic: Clinics located in large cities like Bogotá or Medellín usually charge more than clinics located in smaller cities.
  • The type of liposuction: There are different types of liposuction, such as traditional liposuction, tumescent liposuction, and laser liposuction. The type of liposuction chosen will also affect the price.
  • The amount of fat to be removed: The more fat that is removed, the higher the price will be.

In general, the price of liposuction in Colombia can range between $5,000,000 and $20,000,000 Colombian pesos.

Frequently Asked Questions About Liposuction Surgery

Am I a good candidate for liposuction surgery?

A good candidate for liposuction is defined as anyone who has realistic expectations, is in good health, and is likely to be happy with the results of liposuction. Although liposuction can often provide very substantial improvements, it is rare for liposuction results to be absolutely perfect.

There are a variety of techniques that facilitate the liposuction procedure in Bogotá:

  • Tumescent liposuction: Uses an “irrigation solution” with a local anesthetic, such as lidocaine, and other medications in intravenous fluids, which is infiltrated before starting the aspiration, causing blood vessels to shrink or constrict. This allows liposuction in Bogotá to be performed with minimal blood loss and reduces post-operative pain.
  • Suction-assisted liposculpture: This is the most traditional form of liposuction, where special equipment called a liposuctor is used, which is an instrument similar to a vacuum cleaner that generates controlled suction pressure.
  • Power-assisted liposuction (PAL or Vibroliposuction): This is a variant of traditional suction-assisted liposuction that incorporates the use of a tool (special handpiece) to increase the movement of the cannula, which produces less resistance to fat extraction.
  • Ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty: Transmits energy through a special handpiece and adapted cannulas that help loosen and melt fat, allowing for faster extraction in dense or fibrous areas.
  • VASER Lipo: This is a variation of ultrasound-assisted liposuction that uses an ultrasound cannula with multiple grooves that evenly disperse energy, improves skin retraction after the procedure, and facilitates fat aspiration in areas with greater density.
  • Laser Lipo (such as Smartlipo and Slimlipo): This is a relatively new technology. The theory is that the laser works similarly to ultrasound to break down fat cells using laser energy, making fat aspiration more efficient and less traumatic for the patient. A disadvantage is that the fat extracted by laser cannot be used for transfer to other areas as it destroys the fat cells (adipocytes).
  • High-definition natural liposculpture: This is a procedure that involves aspirating excess fat from target areas to create a lean, muscular, and athletic appearance in different areas of the body. In the abdominal region, for example, excess fat is aspirated, and valleys and ridges are created to give the appearance of a defined and highly sculpted abdomen.

There is no single best liposuction technique; each patient should be individualized according to their body characteristics. It is important to know that while some new technologies may improve the outcome in this type of surgery, choosing a procedure based on “what’s new” is never a guarantee that it will be the best. For this reason, be sure to have your procedure performed by a certified plastic surgeon in Bogotá, such as Dr. Guevara.

Liposuction in Buttocks / Abdominal Liposuction

When there is an accumulation of localized fat in a specific region of the body, in this case the gluteal area, it is necessary to perform liposuction in Bogotá.

The surgery is performed through small incisions, through which a cannula is inserted to extract the excess fat, thus shaping the area to be treated. We also eliminate any cellulite that may exist in the buttocks, a very common problem in women, although it can also appear in men.

The cannulas used are extremely thin and leave hardly any scars, so the natural results we obtain are truly satisfactory for our patients.

At Dr. Guevara Plastic Surgery, we work daily to offer the latest innovations in aesthetic medicine with the sole aim that our patients have natural results.

With buttocks liposuction, we will study the size and volume of that area to achieve, by eliminating those excesses, a more proportionate and natural appearance of the buttocks.

As a general rule, no more than 40% of the fat should be removed from each buttock, since in addition to an aesthetic function, it is important from a functional point of view.

Advantages

Through this intervention, we will improve several aspects:

  • We reshape the form of our buttocks.
  • We reduce the sensation of flaccidity.
  • In many cases, a large part of the skin’s cellulite is eliminated.
  • We increase skin retraction and therefore renew its shape and texture.

Normally, the fat-reducing effects of this type of liposuction usually last about 10 years, although it will depend on the healthy lifestyle carried out by the patient and aging.

Arm Liposuction

Arm liposuction is the solution for fat accumulations in the arms that produce that unaesthetic sensation of flaccidity. It is usually more common in women because genetics cause flaccidity to reproduce faster and fat accumulations to generate.

It is important that the patient has good skin quality, because if there are stretch marks or an abundant excess of skin, optimal results will not be obtained.

It is more commonly performed on women because genetics dictate that there is more flaccidity on the inner part of the arm and an extra accumulation of fatty tissue. It is essential, when considering arm liposuction, that the patient has good quality skin. Although it is difficult to have excellent skin in this area so prone to flaccidity, it must have good tone.

The main advantages are:

  • The contour is greatly improved, reducing the arm’s perimeter and eliminating that localized fat.
  • The scars left are minimal, practically invisible.
  • Normal activity can be resumed almost the next day.
  • Results are seen after 2-3 months.
  • The fat eliminated will not reappear.

Liposuction is incredibly safe. Rare problems that can potentially occur with any surgical procedure include infections, bleeding, skin ulcerations, and nerve damage.

Patients frequently ask me this question: will fat cells grow back after liposuction?

Sex, health, heredity, diet, and activity level are factors that determine where and how much fat will be deposited in the body. When too much is deposited in specific areas that affect body contour, the affected areas can be sculpted to achieve a more athletic appearance.

Many patients worry that if they undergo liposuction, the fat cells will not only grow back but will grow in another area. This is not the case. Your body stops developing new fat cells after puberty, and new ones will not grow unless the body undergoes an extreme change like morbid obesity, at which point new fat cells are made to accommodate the new fat levels.

After liposuction, the ideal is to maintain your weight; it is even better if the patient loses a few extra pounds. But if you gain a significant amount of weight, the fat has to go somewhere. Fat deposits will not grow in the areas treated in the procedure, but the untreated fat cells will expand. So, if after liposuction you continue to eat more calories than you burn, the excess will be stored as fat, and where it is stored depends on factors such as sex, health, heredity, lifestyle, and types of activity.

When you sit down with your plastic surgeon in Bogotá to discuss your body contouring goals, you may want to ask about the possibility of adding liposuction to your tummy tuck surgery. For many men and women, a combination of liposuction plus a tummy tuck can create enhanced results that meet or exceed expectations. If you are still undecided about whether you should opt for a combined body contouring procedure, gathering as much useful information as possible can help you make the best decision for your individual situation.

The benefits of including liposuction with your tummy tuck surgery: The most notable benefit of adding liposuction to your tummy tuck is the fact that your plastic surgeon in Bogotá can treat exercise-resistant fat at the same time as removing loose skin and repairing muscle tissue. Therefore, you will only need to schedule one surgery and will only have one recovery period, instead of two separate procedures and recoveries.

Another benefit of a combined lipo-abdominoplasty procedure is that your plastic surgeon in Bogotá can eliminate the need for post-surgical drains by using a layered suturing technique. With this method, you will not have to deal with complicated drains while you recover, and the recovery period is often shorter than that of a regular tummy tuck. Finally, when you combine a tummy tuck with liposuction, you can maximize your body contouring results in a way that is simply not possible with either procedure alone. In most cases, excess fat and loose skin go hand in hand, so treating these two common cosmetic concerns at the same time is often the most efficient and effective approach.

Choosing a plastic surgeon in Bogotá for your body contouring procedure: If you are considering a combined body contouring procedure, be sure to choose a certified plastic surgeon in Bogotá who has extensive experience performing these types of surgeries, as well as performing both procedures in a single combined surgery. Be sure to request before-and-after photos to ensure that any potential plastic surgeon in Bogotá you choose is capable of delivering the results you expect.
