What is breast reduction?

Having firm and proportionate breasts in relation to the rest of the body is a basic beauty goal that many women desire, and one that excessively large breasts can prevent them from achieving.

Breast hypertrophy (large breasts), which is often accompanied by back pain, is corrected with this procedure that involves the removal of fatty and mammary tissue using the latest techniques, achieving a more harmonious result.

In the initial consultation, you will receive information about the procedure, and the plastic surgeon in Bogotá, Dr. Guevara, will take your medical history. In the consultations prior to the breast reduction surgery, a breast examination, the measurement of certain parameters and your general health status, and the taking of photographs are necessary. In extreme cases, we may recommend a mammogram. This will not only rule out the small possibility of breast cancer but will also reveal the composition of the breast. Once we know how much fat and glandular tissue the breast contains, we can choose the appropriate surgical technique.

The breast examination, along with your age and medical history, will help determine if other complementary tests (blood tests, electrocardiogram, ultrasound, etc.) are needed before the operation. The measurements will help decide on the technique to be used, and the photographs will serve to evaluate the result. It is important to mention if you have any significant medical conditions; if you are a smoker; if you take any medication; or if you are allergic to any medication or product. Our advice is that you should ask about anything you are unsure of. It is important to communicate your expectations to the surgeon so that they can explain whether they can be met or if there are limitations to them.

Post-operative period

Following breast reduction surgery, you will feel some discomfort for a few days. However, this discomfort can be managed with medication. In any case, you should be accompanied by a responsible adult for a day or two who can assist you with whatever you need. You will experience swelling for some time. To help reduce inflammation, you will wear an elastic garment for a while. Although most of the swelling will subside within a few weeks, it may take three months or more for the final results of the surgery to become apparent. In the meantime, it’s important to gradually return to your normal routine.

You should recover progressively and return to your usual activities when you feel well – which could be one to two days after surgery. If there are sutures, they will be removed one to two weeks after the procedure. We will advise you to limit your physical activity initially, avoiding heavy exercises or sudden movements for three weeks. In general, it will be approximately one month before you can return to your normal physical activity. You should avoid exposing the scars to the sun for at least six months. Sunlight can cause permanent pigmentation changes in the skin, leading to the darkening of scars. If sun exposure is unavoidable, use sunscreen. The results of the procedure are significant and permanent. If your expectations are realistic, the changes will be positive, and you will be satisfied with your new appearance.

Breast reduction.

Dr. Guevara will explain what results can be achieved and which surgical technique is most suitable for your breast reduction. He will explain the techniques and the type of anesthesia that will be used, and where the surgery will be performed.

Excessively large breasts are physically uncomfortable and cause psychological problems, 1 limiting the patient when exercising or dressing in certain ways. Sometimes the breasts are so large that they create back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as irritate the skin underneath them.   With breast reduction surgery, we aim to achieve a breast size proportionate to the patient’s chest, correct any asymmetries, and give the breasts a suitable shape. The patient experiences improved comfort and relief from the discomfort that the weight caused on their back, shoulders, and neck. They will also find that their breasts are a size proportionate to the rest of their anatomy and have a more attractive shape, which will encourage them to exercise without discomfort.

To reduce the size of a breast, we will need to make incisions around the areola and from there down to the inframammary fold. In certain cases, although not always, when the breast is larger, it is necessary to complete the scars with a horizontal one in the inframammary fold.”

Advantages of breast reduction.

  • It improves back pain and heaviness secondary to breast hypertrophy.
  • It improves skin irritation in the breast folds.
  • The results are permanent; the breasts do not grow back to their original size.
